In a few weeks Leonardo DiCaprio will experience the biggest moment of his career when he FINALLY takes home an Oscar (fingers crossed).
Ahead of this historic moment, Johnny Depp spoke about what it was like to work with a 19-year-old Leo on What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993. The 52-year-old actor stated, "It was a hard time for me, that film” and admitted that he “tortured” a young DiCaprio during the shoot.
At the time Depp was a 30-year-old Hollywood heartthrob, and DiCaprio was only a teenager just starting out, so it’s understandable that the age difference caused some problems. In an interview with People magazine, Depp explained himself.
"He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. 'No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.'"
Despite the bad behaviour back then, Depp says he respects DiCaprio a lot. DiCaprio’s role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape earned him his very first Oscar nomination. Depp explained that DiCaprio “worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching”.
While Depp played dumb on why this period in his life was so dark that he felt the need to torture a teenager, but we wonder if it had anything to do with his high-profile break up with Winona Ryder.
Ryder and Depp were the biggest celebrity romance of the 90s dating from 1989-1993. During their relationship Depp got 'Winona Forever' tattooed on his arm, which he later changed to 'Wino Forever'.
