Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark has cancelled all future work commitments after being admitted to hospital.

The Danish palace released a statement confirming the Prince underwent back surgery on Sunday to correct a slipped disc, and was treated at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.

The surgery went smoothly, and the Prince will recover at home. He is expected to resume his royal duties within a few weeks.

The 50-year-old has complained of his back problems before, commenting in a promotional video in May that it affected his performance in the Royal Run:

"I have had a few back problems lately which have stopped me from going running as I would like to."

Frederik and his wife, ‘our’ Princess Mary, were recently confirmed to be visiting Australia for the upcoming Invictus Games in October.

The Games, which sees over 500 past and present military personnel from 18 countries compete in sporting events, was created by Prince Harry, with the first Games taking place in London in 2014.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will open the Games in Sydney, which run from October 20 to 27. David Beckham will also attend in his capacity as an Invictus Games Ambassador.
