According to reports from various publications The Project’s co-host Waleed Aly is “over” his job and is “eyeing off” Leigh Sales’ role at the ABC.

The Daily Telegraph reports Aly is currently in talks with the national broadcaster.

Aly has been fronting Network Ten’s show since 2015 and reports say he now believes it is “a little beneath him”.

Friends say the academic lawyer and writer was thinking of returning to the ABC and would prefer to have the role as anchor of the current affairs program, 7.30.

These reports come just a few weeks after the news that Lisa Wilkinson has left Nine Network and jumped ship to a spot on the panel of The Project’s Sunday night edition.

Aly is a former host of ABC TV’s Big Ideas program and resigned as ABC Radio National drive host in late 2014 to join The Project.

He is known for strongly voicing his opinion on various issues such as Islamic terrorism and other issues fronting the world.
