The sad reason why Avril Lavigne disappeared from the public eye

Noughties pop star Avril Lavigne has announced she’s returning to music - and shared with fans the sad story of her last few years.

All but vanished from the public eye, the 33-year-old revealed her battle with Lyme disease had worsened.

Avril was first diagnosed with the disease in April 2015, two years after her last album was released.

Posting an open letter on her website, Avril explained her illness caused her entire body to “shut down”:

“I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”

Calling her illness “the battle of my lifetime”, Avril told fans she wrote most of her new music while recovering in bed, confirming her new single Head Above Water will be released on September 19.

She told fans she was hesitant to speak about her private life - understandable given the media scrutiny following her 2015 divorce from Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger.

“I have decided to be truthful about my struggle, open and more vulnerable than ever before. And to be honest, part of me doesn’t want to talk about being sick because I want it to all be behind me, but I know I have to. Because not only is it a part of my life, I need to bring awareness to the severity of Lyme Disease. A single bug bite can f— you up hard.”

She urged fans to join her to help others suffering from the disease via her eponymous charity. The Avril Lavigne Foundation provides funding education and support for people with Lyme disease, disabilities and serious illnesses.
