Over the past few months, Modern Family has been teasing to its fans there will be a "significant character" being killed off during the show's 10th season.

With United States airing their episodes first, we found out who the significant character is and it left fans disappointed.

Delia ‘DeDe’ Pritchett, Jay Pritchett’s ex-wife, the mother of Claire Dunphy and Mitchell Pritchett and the grandmother of Haley, Alex, Luke and Lily.

So yes, we know what you're thinking... "Significant" they said.

News.com.au reported Delia, played by actress Shelley Long appeared in just seven of the show’s 214 episodes to date.

Fans had something to say about the so called "beloved family member" death:

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series’ co-creator, Christopher Lloyd said they are “handling some bigger life events” during this season, death included.

“(The death) will be a moving event — and an event that has repercussions across several episodes."
