City of Melbourne's Christmas Festival

By Lynette C December 17, 2018

Christmas is here, the most wonderful time of the year! So the song goes, but what it doesn’t mention is that Melbourne’s the most wonderful place of all during the festive season. From Christmas Square at Federation Square to Santa’s new home at Town Hall, there’s endless fun for everyone.

Christmas Festival Launch

30 November from 7pm – Fed Square

Come together for the opening of the season, as Melbourne’s 16-metre high Christmas tree is officially lit up for the first time.

Behold the 192 individually-programmed LED branches and a new star perched atop the tree twinkling in the night sky. Sleigh bells will ring as Santa Claus and his friends arrive in town to entertain the crowd.

Christmas Square

30 November to 25 December - Light shows from 9pm at Fed Square

Don’t miss out on a visit to Melbourne’s official festive destination – Christmas Square. Celebrate under the giant tree with sound and light shows every night throughout December or enjoy exclusive concerts on Fridays and fun daily activities.

Santa’s House

1 to 24 December, 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm daily, 4pm to 7pm Thursdays and Fridays - Melbourne Town Hall Forecourt

Santa’s got a brand new house, adorned with splendid decorations right in front of Melbourne Town Hall.

Revisit fond childhood memories and eavesdrop on your kids as they tell Santa which presents they’re hoping to open on Christmas morning. Be sure to snap your free photo with the kids and the man in red.

Christmas Projections

30 November to 25 December, 9pm to 10.30pm - Fed Square, Melbourne Town Hall and New Quay Promenade Docklands

Melbourne’s famous Christmas projections are back with free animated shows illuminated on iconic city locations.

Catch the feature show at Fed Square and make your mark on the Yarra Building using savvy ‘finger-paint’ technology to control your own vibrant light projection. Marvel at the Silence Statues on New Quay Promenade as they transform into colourful sculptures.

Christmas Bauble

30 November to 25 December - Fed Square

You know Christmas is coming when your Instagram feed is chock full of selfies in front of our sparkly Christmas bauble.

The city’s favourite six-metre high white decoration brightens the Fed Square forecourt, glinting in the day and twinkling all night. Pose inside, perch outside – the blingy charms of the bauble are impossible to resist for a glittering selfie.

Gingerbread Village (gold coin donation)

1 to 24 December, 9am to 8.15pm, Riverside Gallery at Fed Square

Follow the heavenly scent to catch some of Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks recreated in gingerbread. The clever chefs always add a new slice of real estate to the village.
