Aussie Tennis Legend Ash Barty Is The New World Number One

By Ally Parker June 24, 2019

Aussie legend Ash Barty has secured her spot as World No. 1 after defeating opponenet Julia Goerges in straight sets. She is the first Australian to take the top spot since Lleyton Hewitt in 2003 and takes over from Japan's Naomi Osaka.

Her win makes her just the second Aussie female to hold the title after Goolagong Cawley in 1976. She is also the 27th woman ever to earn the coveted spot.

"You always dream of it as a little kid, but for it to become a reality is incredible, it really is,” Ash said after receiving her winning trophy.

“It’s been the most incredible journey for myself and my team. To have this become a reality … I didn’t think that was in my realm this year.

“We started from scratch without a ranking and now to be where we are, not only for me, is a massive, massive achievement for them.”
