What It Really Means When You Dream Of Flying

The guru is in.

Picture this: you’re chillin’ in a peaceful state with a bunch of bros. “Let’s get out of here,” they say. Your wings unfurl. You soar out of there. You are a flying god. You wake up and realise… it was just a dream.

*cue Nelly*

We’ve all felt the supernatural thrill of our mind flying us up, up, and away at bedtime. But what is our unconscious mind telling us about our hidden desires (other than the wish for wings) when we have these dreams?

Many psychologists say analysing common dream themes, like flying, can serve as a roadmap to navigating our anxieties, hopes and fears.

So without further ado, here’s a few reasons why you MIGHT be floating through the skies in your after hours.

1. You’re trying to escape from something

What is it, you ask? Well, that’s for you to find out, dreamer. Some analogies say dreams of flight are a sure indicator that you feel overwhelmed in everyday life and need to escape… QUICK! The question you need to consider is: do you feel stressed or overwhelmed? Take some time to relax.

2. You are super, super ambitious

And there’s nothing wrong with that! Flying in some dream books symbolises the dreamer’s ambition to ‘fly higher’ in life, and can be an indicator of fulfilment and success. Flying dreams are generally a wakeup call to the dreamer, and could also mean that you’re pushing yourself too hard to achieve the impossible (i.e. flying… duh). I mean, is Icarus ringing any alarm bells?!

3. You feel content and relaxed

If your flying dream is more of a casual-floating-along dream, analysts reckon you’re doing pretty good at life. These sort of tranquil dreamscapes are typically interpreted to mean that there is a range of freedoms and possibilities in your life at the moment, and you should just sit back, relax, and let the world be your oyster.

4. You need to try a different outlook

Flying along with a birds-eye view of your environment can mean you’re looking for a new perspective on something. What’s on your mind? This type of dream is about thinking outside the box to solve a problem or issue that might be bugging you.

5. You’re feeling restricted and need momentum

It could be at work, home or in love – but you’re stuck. Your subconscious mind is flying you away from the downward draft at sleep time, but you’re the only one who can do it in the light. Some dreams of flying can highlight an experience of being stifled that the dreamer may not yet be aware of. In almost every cultural analysis, flying represents a release from the restriction.

Whichever one it is, keep dreaming folks.
