Meghan Markle shocks by breaking strict royal protocol at the Queen’s birthday celebration

By Hayley June 10, 2018

The Queen celebrated her 92nd birthday - and her recovery from cataract surgery - on the Buckingham Palace balcony today. But all eyes were on Meghan Markle’s ‘risque’ outfit.

The royals were out in force for Trooping The Colour - a formal ceremony uniting over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians to honour The Queen’s official birthday (her actual birthday was April 21).

It was Meghan’s first appearance on the famous balcony, where generations of royals have popped out for a wave for decades. And while she looked perfect to us in a prim pink number with matching hat - royal watchers took issue with the cut of the dress.

The dress, by Kate Middleton favourite Carolina Herrera - sat off the shoulder, which is apparently a no-no for daytime royal duties.

Kate Middleton has worn sleeves past her elbow since her first Trooping appearance in 2011, while Princess Diana never wore short sleeves at the event since her debut in 1981.

There were more fans leaping to Meghan’s defence than naysayers, though - with many likening her choice to Diana’s general fashion-forward attitude.

Anyway. All the haters in the world can’t change the fact that Meghan is an actual flawless queen - sorry, Duchess - and we’re obsessed.

Can we also talk about how besotted Prince Harry is? There’s something in our eye…
