Dove slammed on social media for this highly controversial, 'racist' ad

By Christina Cavaleri October 9, 2017

Oh dear God. WHY.

Dove is being slammed for its most recent ad which shows a black woman seemingly taking off her shirt and skin to become a white woman. The since-deleted image has now gone viral after make-up artist Naomi Leann Blake shared a screenshot.

The company took to Facebook to share an apology, but it was already too late, former fans of the product have taken to social media to share their disgust. Dove said:

"Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused. The feedback that has been shared is important to us and we’ll use it to guide us in the future."

Comments on the post reveal that the apology was what really "missed the mark". Just some of the comments were as follows:

"Missing the mark? I honestly thought this was a hoax, because it is the most ridiculously racist advertising I've seen. I'm sick that your product is in my home. Never again."

"You've made 'mistakes' like this before. Until you really involve people of color at all levels of your company and every step of your decision-making processes, you will probably make this 'mistake' again. What will you do differently this time?"

"This ad doesn't miss the mark. It appears to very precisely hit an extremely racist target. I am shocked and horrified to think that any company would consider something like this appropriate marketing for even a second. It should never have made it out of concept, and whoever conceived of it should have been strongly mentored-if indeed it was the innocent mistake you seem to claim-- or terminated if it was actually the KKK level misogynoir it appears to be."

"Have you already fixed your product marketed 'for normal to dark skin' or is that still an issue that needs fixed?"

The last comment is in reference to this product:

That's not the only questionable product or marketing ploys the company has used either, this one shows a before and after photo featuring models from lightest to darkest:

Somebody definitely got fired for this!
