By Marni Dixit April 24, 2015

Everyone knows about The French Paradox: eating cheese, fatty cuts of meat, buttery pastries and drinking red wine, while still staying slim.

In fact, France has one of the lowest incidences of obesity.

So why is this? And how can you adopt the French way of eating while still staying healthy and trim?

1. French eat leisurely.

In France, eating is a social occasion and a time to enjoy food. They don't shovel down bags of chips on the run - food is loved and enjoyed with ease.

2. Red wine makes dining more social.

Enjoying a few glasses of red alongside dinner with friends can help to slow down the pace you eat at, meaning you'll feel fuller quicker.

3. French spend more time with food.

Food is such an integral part of society in France that it's pleasururable rather than something they deny themselves of to be slim. Seeing food as part of an enjoyable social experience means you are less likely to binge.

4. Moderation is key.

A little of what you fancy does you good - the operative word being 'little'. A square of chocolate after dinner, a glass of wine with lunch and a little butter on your toast will do you no harm.

5. Fat is very satisfying.

Low fat diets are counterproductive as fat helps beat your cravings! So all that cheese, cream and steak keeps French women feeling fuller for longer and more satisfied on less food.

6. French portions are smaller.

They may eat more indulgent foods, but they eat small portions of them.

7. French food is predominantly homemade.

No pre-packaged microwave meals in a Parisian's kitchen.

8. French women avoid fizzy drinks.

You won't see elegant French women sucking back Mountain Dew or Fanta; they prefer still or sparkling mineral water.
