Hey Australia, We Have Our Shrek And Fiona For Shrek The Musical

By Krisinda Merhi July 16, 2019

Couple goals.

Shrek is the most underrated love story of all time.

Why watch Disney princesses prance around when you can watch an epic quest with an ogre and a talking donkey who both find love in the most unlikely place?

Now the OG film has been made into a musical, and that musical is headed to Australia.

And we have our Shrek and Fiona: Ben Mingay and Lucy Durack.

On screen Ben Mingay has been seen in iconic Aussie shows like Packed to the Rafters and Home and Away. He also has some pretty impressive musical theatre credits, including the role of Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys, the title role in The Phantom of the Opera, and Billy in the original Australian production of Dirty Dancing

Lucy is best known for playing the role of Glinda the Good Witch in the Australian production of Wicked, so imagining her in a big, green, ogre suit is a little hard. Definitely far removed from sequins and tiaras. But Lucy is a musical theatre pro and if anyone can absolutely nail the role of Fiona, she can.

It was also announced that Australian musical royalty Marcia Hines would play the role of the Dragon in a special guest appearance for the Sydney season.

“When the opportunity to produce SHREK THE MUSICAL arose, I instantly thought of Ben and Lucy as ideal casting for Shrek and Princess Fiona, and I’m thrilled they have both agreed to join the production. And when I saw Marcia Hines command the stage in Saturday Night Fever, I knew she should play our Dragon,” said producer John Frost.

“We’ll be auditioning for the rest of the cast next month and I can’t wait to find Donkey, Lord Farquaad, Gingy, Pinocchio and all the wonderful characters in this hilarious musical comedy.

The Broadway smash hit SHREK THE MUSICAL will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, The Star in early January 2020, followed by seasons at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne from February and at the Lyric Theatre, Brisbane following.

The production follows the same story we all grew up loving, laughing at and quoting (“I like that boulder, that’s a nice boulder”/“THE MUFFIN MAN?!!!?!”/“Better out than in I always say”/*insert favourite line here*).

The musical features 19 songs and choreography to match and we’re super keen.

Mainly because watching a green dude dance around in a fat ogre suit will be hilarious.

Purchase tickets at Melbourne and Brisbane seasons will go on sale later this year.
