Sounds thrilling.

The story of Sweeney Todd is a dark and thrilling one.

Inspired by Penny Dreadful, this story focuses on an exiled barber who returns to London seeking vengeance against the judge who framed him in order to woo his wife.

Sweeney Todd opens up a new barber shop where he schemes against those who have wronged him.

And in the Australian musical production, Sweeney also sings. Go figure.

The musical combines unique set design, lighting, and costumes with a 22-piece orchestra to bring a performance that is razor-sharp and exciting.

Sweeney Todd will be played by leading man Anthony Warlow and Gina Riley will play the tragi-comic role of pie-maker Mrs Lovett.

Other cast members include Debra Byrne as the Beggar Woman; Michael Falzon as Pirelli; and celebrated international bass-baritone opera star Daniel Sumegi as Judge Turpin.

Sweeney Todd will be presented for six shows only in both Sydney and Melbourne from 13

to 23 June to celebrate the production’s 40th anniversary.

The official performance dates are:

13 - 16 June: Darling Harbour Theatre, ICC, Sydney

20 - 23 June: Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne

The musical first opened on Broadway in 1979 and has had countless adaptations, including a 2007 film by Tim Burton.
