We all have bad days at work and it can really make the rest of the day outside of work suck too. 

You start fantasising about where you’d rather be and whom you’d rather be with and then it just makes the whole situation worse when you look up from your fantasy and see your workplace instead.

But it’s not too hard to perk yourself up a little at work when it feels like everything is heading into the pooper. And the best part is that they’re all really simple and easy to do! Take a couple minutes to try out one of these mood-improving things next time you’re feeling down at work.

1. Stew for one minute

Give yourself one minute to feel grumpy and upset. Then move forward. It’s not healthy to be fuming all day, but a short period of letting your emotions go will mean you don’t explode later on. It will also make it easier for you to let your frustration pass.

2. Buy some desk flowers

Flowers are pretty! And how can you stay frowning when there’s a beautiful bunch of colour sitting right in front of you. Some studies have found that flowers provide and instant and lasting mood boost, so this a sure fire way to put a smile on your dial again.

3. Write out a happy list

Sometimes getting your thoughts out on paper can help, but so does writing a list of things that you’re happy and grateful for in that moment. It could be something really simple, like your hair looks awesome, or it could be that you’re looking forward to a friend catch-up on the weekend. Your mind will focus on the positive and your grumpiness will shift!

4. Make a snack and coffee run with your office bestie

Nothing beats a chat with a mate, so grab your bestie in the office and talk it all out over a snack and a coffee. A breath of fresh air will also help lift your mood a lot.

5. Give yourself a phone break

Whip out your phone and do something fun for a couple minutes. Scroll through Instagram, play your favourite game, just distract yourself from your misery for a little while and when you delve back into work, you’ll feel slightly better.

6. Go out of your way to do something nice

Doing something for someone else will contribute to how you feel. If you do something nice, you’ll feel a little nicer too. Buy your desk buddy a coffee, sending a cute text to a loved one, donate to charity – whatever will give you the warm fuzzies.

7. Time out

Take a complete time out from everything. Make yourself a cup of tea, close your eyes and empty your mind for a couple minutes.

8. Exercise

Doing a little spurt of exercise will immediately improve how you’re feeling. Even the bare minimum, like a couple jumping jacks, a few stretches or a quick run on the spot will those endorphins flow.

9. Treat yourself

Spoil yourself a little. Whether it be comfort food, a bit of retail therapy on your break or a wine the second you finish work, treat yoself a little in the midst of a bad day.
